19 May meeting: Andrew Nielson of the Howard League for Penal Reform, “We need to talk about prisons”

prison-howard-editedThursday 19 May, 7.30 pm at University Centre Shrewsbury, Guildhall, Shrewsbury SY3 8HQ.

Prisons are now overcrowded places where violence and death are commonplace, while purposeful activity such as work or training has levelled off as cuts to staff and resources have left prisoners locked in their cells for the vast majority of the week. If we want to see prisons as places of genuine reform, where people leave less likely to commit crime, then we have to ask hard questions about the purpose of prison and look again at who we are locking up in the first place.
